About
the walk:
The walk follows part of the Sidlaw Hills and has wonderful panoramic views of the River Tay to the south and across Strathmore to the Grampian mountains in the north. A notable feature is the Meridian Monument erected in 1752 by a local landowner and amateur astronomer in order to make transit observations of the sun and so keep his clocks accurate. The walk continues to Lundie Crags offering superb views of the Tay estuary.
Part
of the descent to the village of Newtyle is on the route of a long-disused
railway. The
Dundee and Newtyle Railway opened
in 1832 and was the first railway in the north of Scotland. It was built to
transfer goods from Strathmore to the port of Dundee. The walk ends
(conveniently) at the Belmont Arms where the railway met the Perth to Forfar
line.
