Perthshire - Big Tree Country

Home    Schedule

Perthshire is recognised as Big Tree Country both at home and abroad.  No other region in the UK or Europe has such a remarkable or internationally important accumulation of ancient trees and woodlands.  Featuring 22 of the Top 100 Heritage Trees of Scotland, its glories include the tallest hedge in the world at Meikleour, the oldest living organism in Europe - the Fortingall Yew - and the widest conifer in Britain - a Wellingtonia at Cluny.

The Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust is now leading a £1.85million, 3 year partnership of public agencies and private owners.  Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Forestry Commission Scotland and many other contributors, the Heritage and Access Project aims to conserve this outstanding woodland quality by managing individual trees and woods, improving better access and fostering greater understanding of this living heritage.  To learn more about this major initiative, sign up for walk 8 or visit www.perthshirebigtreecountry.co.uk.
